Job Description

Aftenro is seeking a full time TMA for the day shift. TMA must be active on the nursing assistant registry and have one of the following:

a) trained medication aide certificate

b) Clinical Foundations of Nursing and Foundations of Nursing completed in nursing program

c) CMA certificate

I. Purpose

Under the supervision and direction of a licensed nurse, prepares, administers and records select oral, nasal, topical ointments, transdermal, rectal, inhalant, and ophthalmic medications to residents. Trained to measure and record blood pressure and radial and apical pulse. Can also perform simple dressing changes.

II. Qualifications

Education: Current licensure in the State of Minnesota as a Nursing Assistant Registered.

Current certification in the State of Minnesota as a Trained Medication Assistant

experience: Previous long- term care experience

III. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Listen to shift report and keep open lines of communication with supervisor, co-workers and on-coming shift
  • Attend continuing education and team meetings as scheduled and/or assigned.
  • Report occupational exposures to needle-sticks, blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and hazardous chemicals in accordance with facility policy and procedures governing accidents and incidents
  • Develop and maintain a good working relationships with inter-departmental personnel.
  • Attend nurses meetings as appropriate
  • Maintain a clean, safe and efficient work environment
  • Maintains continuing education requirements

A. Resident Care Functions

  • Maintains competence in all required skills within the facility
  • Treats and ensures that residents are treated with respect and dignity
  • Immediately reports any suspected abuse or neglect per Aftenro policy
  • Consults with licensed nurse prior to administering prn medications
  • Uses and documents accordingly appropriate pain scale, and non-medication interventions prior to administering prn medication
  • Administers prescribed medications, scheduled controlled medication, and simple treatments per MD orders, under the supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Is knowledgeable of medication, dosage, route of administration, and reports side effects, interactions, and potential allergic reactions
  • Reports level of pain, resident response, side effects, and problems or potential problems to a licensed nurse
  • Documents in an accurate and timely manner according to policies and procedures of the facility
  • Follows all shift routines and policies and procedures
  • Has knowledge of, and complies with all safety and emergency protocols
  • Follows all DNR/DNI/CPR/Comfort Care protocols and orders
  • Other duties assigned as directed by supervisor

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Documents as appropriate, and reports all incidents, accidents that occur involving residents, visitors, and staff
  • Documents signature, and initials on medication/treatment administration record that exhibits an informative and descriptive manner reflecting the care provided and resident response
  • Completes medication error document and reports errors to licensed nurse
  • Monitor need for and orders from the pharmacy, resident’s medication supplies and stock supply. Contacts pharmacy for refills per policy. Stocks medication cart
  • Per policy files and signs medication supply, delivery, and associated records, within parameters of TMA practice
  • Participate in the MDS/RAI process as determined by facility policy

B. Physical Requirements

  • Ability to endure prolonged walking, sitting, standing, use of pulling, bending, and stooping movement
  • Ability to adapt to changes in daily work hours and schedule
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds
  • Must be in good general health
